Over past 30 years I have been installing treatment plants manufactured by others for small and medium water and wastewater treatment systems. Most of the sewage and wastewater treatment plants have been for hotels, meat and fish processing and garments industry. Many of these are located in metropolitan areas where neighbourhood is very sensitive and the land is expensive. My objectives were to minimize the size of the plant and reduce sludge generation or better “zero sludge” as disposal of sludge could be a “smelly and cumbersome exercise”. Yes! The problem of untreated wastewater polluting the environment is solved but it creates another problem of sludge disposal in a sensitive neighbourhood, as it may give out a bad odour and if the leachate leaks out during the transportation the smell remains for longer hours.
